You performed a Valsalva Maneuvar (increasing belly pressure by pushing your diaphragm down). These maneuvers are famous for causing herniated discs if the state of the disc is tenuous (ready to herniate).

The difference in pain locations probably has to do with the location of the disc and the nerve root involved. I have also seen facet irritation with the Valsalva maneuver.
