You might have some difficulty. Three things come to mind. First, these screws go through the C1-2 articular surfaces and removing them will leave large defects in those surfaces which could become arthritic over time and quite painful. The second is that this surgery is designed to fuse C1 to C2. If you have a fusion, then removing the hardware is a mute point. Thirdly, C2 dens fractures don’t heal well. If your fracture line is still present in the dens, you cannot remove the screws as you would become unstable.
