I tried out a TENS unit (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) because of lower back pain and it didn’t work at all for me, I just thought it was annoying. Why didn’t it help me? What reasons could there be? I really thought it would work so I could stop taking my opioids.

TENS units are hit or miss. I would say that greater than 70% or patients do not gain significant relief. TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) works by flooding the nervous system with “white noise”. This is designed to block the pain tracks traveling to the brain originating from that area by the “gate theory of pain relief”. There are many other treatments for your back pain so don’t fret.
