My 5 year old had spinal fusion 6 days ago. Her stomach is distended out quite a bit just after surgury. She also has elevated heart rate at a base line of 148 high 180 low 139. They have not let her come home to continue watch her but xray shows gas the Dr said. She has had tube in nose to release pressure no results. She has been passing a lot of gas and regular bowel movements. I believe there is something more serious happening. Blood work normal aside from elevated sodium and anemia a little. What can this be

This condition is called an Ileus and is common after scoliosis surgery. The intestines temporarily “go on strike” and stop working. Normally an ileus clears within 3-5 days but I have rarely seen one go to six days. There are other conditions that can cause this too such as a small bowel obstruction. Did she have an anterior fusion along with a posterior fusion?
