If the radicular nerve (the origination of the sciatic nerve in the spinal canal) is compressed, this will make the entire sciatic nerve sensitive to palpation. Don’t forget that with deep palpation, other structures in the area could be sensitive. If you have a gluteus medius tendonitis, deep palpation will cause pain near the sciatic nerve and you will have pain in the “hip area”.
