    Dear Dr. Corenman
I find your videos and explanations very informative and I hope that you are able to help me.

I had surgery in 2001 because of a disc herniation between C5 and C6. The herniated disc was removed and the surgeon placed a Ray C Cage filled with spongiosa. I don’t know if spongiosa always means bone, but no bone was taken from me, to perform this surgery. In the beginning I had only acceptable side effects from this surgery, but in 2004 I heard and felt a snapping sound from my neck and I was ill for 3 month. I had pain and sensory disturbances and a shelf in my throat that came out if i swallowed and turned my head at the same time. This was preventing me from swallowing my food. A visible sign was that my neck had swollen on one side and I also had difficulty speaking for some time. Ever since this incident I have felt pain and I have sensory distubances. Some times my arms feel very week and my feet scrapes the ground when I walk. If I try to exercise the pain gets worse. Some times I feel a lumb in my throad when I am swallowing. The medical record shows, that there is now a wide medianfokal protrusion/prolapse from discus IV C6/C7 (I am not quite sure what this means). Do you have experience regarding this surgery and the Ray C Cage, that you would like to share with me in order to help me understand my condition?

    Kind regards Mrs. Andersen, Denmark.

The first action you must take is to get an X-ray of your neck and a consult from a spine surgeon. The differential includes pseudoarthrosis at the previous surgical level (lack of complete fusion), possible extrusion of the cage (unlikely at this point), another level in the neck (as you note) that has degenerated or????

You possibly might need a CT of your neck as the ray cage can obscure some MRI scans.

    Dear Dr. Corenman

Thank you for your advice. I will contact my doctor right away. I have seen my MRI last year, and without knowing anything about it, it seems like it is preassure from above, that makes the disc come out on leavel C6/C7. To be honest, I dont get much help. In 2010 I was told, that the surgeons are not skilled enough to help me and I accepted that and “gave up” . Eventhough I am used to my condition by now, it worries me what will happen in the future, if nothing is done about it. Could you tell me if spongiosa always is made from bone or it could be artificial made? Some times I have a burning kind of feeling in the operated part of my neck. I understand that I can not be my own doctor.I believe that your advice will be very welcome, when I ask my doctor for help.

    Kind regards

    Mrs. Andersen, Denmark
