Could plaquenil interfere with fusion?
Plaque nil is an agent that is designed to prevent malaria and also has some immuno-supressant properties for Rheumatoid arthritis. It could theoretically cause reduction of fusion. If this medication is needed then if an ACDF is required, I would use autograft and if a lumbar fusion is required, I would use BMP.

The spine surgeon wants me to wait.I am taking plaquenil for undifferentiated connective disease. My fusion was done with bone bank graft and a plate. The rheumatologist wants me to continue to use plaquenil but the spinal surgeon wants me to wait as long as possible. How much of a risk dies plaquenil present for a successful fusion?
I cannot quantify what effects Plaquenil can cause for a fusion. If the Rheumatologist was adamant that stoppage of this medication would cause a significant flair-up, I would go ahead with the surgery with the caveats as noted above. If however, I talked to the Rheumatologist and we could agree on a 4-6 week period of stoppage of medication, that would cause me less concern.
