I had a microdiscetomy about a week ago, I noticed an instant relief from the nerve pain. I still need to see my doctor for my post op exam, but till then I’m researching about my future. I’d like to do the beach body p90x program so I may strengthen not only my back, but my core and entire body. Would you recommend me doing the program after completing my physical therapy?
I am not crazy about P90X. This program uses ballistic motions (quick jarring motions that require rapid angular changes while the spine is loaded). There are many individuals who can do these maneuvers without risk but these are the same maneuvers that can cause spine injury. I see many injuries from this and the “Insanity” workouts. With a prior microdiscectomy, I think you have a higher risk.
You might be able to do this injury free but my advise is Pilates. This is a controlled core strengthening program that has good benefits without the risks. You can still perform cardiovascular exercise without much risk.
