One of the reasons I am apprehensive of artificial discs in the lumbar spine is that of degenerative facet disease. The mechanics of the artificial disc are not that of a normal intact disc. The increased and aberrant motion created by an artificial disc increases the load on the facets. Degenerative facets like those that were demonstrated on your MRI initially could be causing your continued pain.
