“The chance of ION can be ameliorated with certain precautions so the very small risk can be reduced even further.”
Can you please tell me what precautions can be taken or should be taken to reduce ION risk ?
Thank you
ION (ischemic optic neuropathy) is a rare conditon that can occur after any long surgery. It is thought to occur due to drops in blood pressure and prolonged positioning in suspectable patients. Some of the keys in prevention are the anesthesiolgist monitoring the blood pressure precisely, keeping the eyes free of pressure and trying to reduce surgical time and blood loss.

I have been diagnosed with mild orthostatic intolerance.
Would this put me at further risk with a 3-4 hr surgery ? Any special instruction ?
Orthostatic hypotension is not related to ION. Just make sure you have an anesthesiologist who is cognizant of this condition and will take care of you while you are under anesthesia.

Would this put me at risk of ION during surgery, starting face up and then being rolled over under anesthesia for that long ?
I understand that ION is rare, however I have come across it a few times now while researching surgeons and hospitals.
Thank you again
