Dr. Corenman,
I am 5 1/2 months post discectomy. How long does it take for the disk to fully scar over and heal, i.e. get as strong as it is going to get? And, what percentage of a never herniated disk would you estimate the altered disk to be once fully healed? Thanks!
It takes about 3 months for the scar to become organized. The disc itself does not heal but the outside of the disc develops this “scar membrane”. I would estimate generally that this scar is about 30% as strong as the original fibers that were torn.

Thanks again!
#0% as strong as the original fibers in 3 months.

And if so, how much, and at what timeframe will that occur? My NS said it would take a full year when I started my whole ordeal. I didn’t know enough to ask better questions at the time. He is retired now so I do not have access to him to ask. Thank you very much!
