    Hello
I had spinal surgery on Feb 1. Prior to surgery I had developed bad sciatic pain
Which became worse. I had X-ray and mri
3 epidurals were done to see if the pain would go away. The pain didn’t and after two months of pain I starting feeling numbness in my toes. I contacted a spine surgeon and from the mri the l5sl was affecting me as a 3 inch piece of my disc broke off and had to have surgery to remove it. I had partial laminectomy surgery. After surgery I have noticed numbness in my foot and toes. I was prescribed gabapentin 300mg 2x a days. I feel the foot numbness is getting worse. Van this be possible. I have had 4 acupuncture visits. I don’t have any back pain but have the numbness since surgery and did have it prior to surgery for 2 months. I have requested to see a neurologist to do an emg. If you can suggest anything else please do so. The numbness drives me crazy as it gets worse. Thank you. .

Numbness almost always accompanies significant nerve root compression. It most likely was present prior to your surgery but due to your pain, you did not notice it. Numbness takes at least 6 months to recede and you will find the numbness “patch” will get smaller each month until it goes away or recedes to a small permanent patch.

Thank you for responding to me I was desperate for answers. Do you recommend I see a Neurologist? I was planning on getting an EMG or EVC test to see if their is nerve damage. Sometimes when I am sleeping in the middle of the night I get. a Charlie horse more frequent? Is this common? I usually only get once a year. Is it possible to sometimes take 2.5mg of Percocet for back pain I sometimes get but take Tylenol. I am taking only the Gabapentin 300mg 2x a day.

If you don’t have weakness in your leg, then a neurological consult and EMG will not be helpful. Even if you did have weakness. the results of the EMG could be predicted so that test would not be useful. Charlie horses (cramping or dystonia) are common even without nerve compression.

    Hello Dr,.

Can you recommend anything else to determine if numbness is permanent? I take B12 5000 1x a day Turneric 1000mg 1x a day. I thought about alpha lipoic acid.
The gabapentin 300mg 2x a day I feel isn’t that great for numbness. As for weakness I don’t walk as much as I did. I want to. Would a dr up the gabapentin I am only taking 300mg 2x a day for 30 days. When I took my Percocet I didn’t have any problems of course I wouldn’t want to take that again. I had like drop foot symptoms before the surgery. My side of my foot is numb and the last three toes. Might you know how long of having these symptoms would be permanent
Thank you for all your help.

Numbness generally resolves to a much smaller patch that would you become accustomed. You will have to wait a year to know whether the numbness will disappear. There is nothing you can take orally to change this outcome.
