My husband had an MRI last month and we got the results yesterday
L1-L2 Disc level: normal
L2-L3 disc level: normal
L3-L4 disc level: normal
L4-L5 disc level: Desiccated disc but normal height. Minor bulge with central annaul fissure. No stenosis or neural compression.
L5-S1 disc level: Desiccated disc. There is a small central protrusion extending into the anterior epidural fat. No stenosis or neural compression.
Impression:
1. Minor degenerative disc changes L4-L5 and L5-S1, but with stenosis or neural compression.
2. Minor L4-L5 to disc bulge with central annular fissure.
3. Small central L5-S1 protrusion superimposed on digenerative disc without stenosis or neural compression.Your husband has degenerative discs at L4-5 and L5-S1. There is no compression of the nerves. He does have a small central disc herniation of L5-S1 but this herniation does not touch any nerve structures. His symptoms could be lower back pain but he should not have any radiation of pain into the legs.
Don’t forget that MRI findings do not exist in a vacuum. Many patients have degenerative findings on an MRI and no symptoms.
See the section on the website regarding degenerative disc disease lumbar spine to gain a better understanding of this disorder.
