    Dr. Corenman,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your quick, efficient answers. Hopefully this is my last question: I am experiencing actual pain on my spine. I feel it right on my tailbone from what it feels like. It doesn’t hurt a lot, but it just feels as if my bones are weak. What could the cause of this be?

    Thanks!

    Dr. Corenman,

I also have a lot of muscle tightness in my butt and sometimes thighs, but I’m guessing that’s a part of the healing process.

Probably residual from the surgery but the lumbar spine can generate these symptoms too. Give your self some time but make sure the lumbar MRI does not indicate compression.

    Dr. Corenman,

I had my follow-up with my surgeon, and it went really well. He informed me that most likely, my disc bulge will go away over time. Therefore, I have two quick questions: 1. Why do I have a disc bulge after my microdiscectomy and why is that common? 2. What is the likelihood that a bulge will go away, recede, or stop causing problems?

Disc bulges after surgery are quite common as the torn annulus is generally not removed for the hope it will scar over and seal the tear. The bulge (depending upon the size) should shrink down and become less of an irritant.

    Dr. Corenman,

Thanks for the information about the disc bulge. My surgeon did not explain it as clearly. However, I have another question. Pre-surgery, I had a lot of pain in my ribs, and I had these awful rib spasms. I haven’t had one for five weeks, but yesterday I had PT, and I nearly collapsed this morning from incredibly painful spasms. Do you have any recommendations on what I should do next?
