Dear Doctor Corenman,
Two years ago I got more and more pain in my hamstrings, hipbone and calfs. After several moths of physiotherapy there was no improvement. After a few moths I visited the family doctor again because the problems where getting bigger. There above the problems where related to standing and walking, not to cycling and sitting.
She send me to the orthopedist who said that he could nothing do for me and send me to the neurologist. His diagnosis was lumbar stenosis and dependent of the seriousness of the complaints you had three stages 1. physiotherapy more specialized, 2. Lyrica for ever and last 3. surgery.
After several months of physiotherapy there was no improvement. So I went back to my family doctor and got Lyrica (pregabaline) first in a small dose (100 mg a day, later on a larger dose 300 mg a day). It helps to decrease the pain but the pain is always there.
I sought for a neurosurgeon, who did every week lumbar stenoses surgery.
He made several scans (MRI and CT) and said to me I had a very rare problem he could not solve. It was the second time in his career that he encountered this. According to his opinion it had to be diagnosed as a chondroma or chondrosarcoma. He told me that only a few academic hospitals or in the case of a chondrosarcoma only one academic hospital was sufficient equipped with knowledge and experience for a treatment. A very invasive operation had to be doneThese academic hospitals are officially appointed for treatment of this and other kinds of tumors in the Netherlands.
My question is of you can tell me which hospitals in Germany are also equipped and specialized for treatment of such a kind of problem. The difference in treatment between a chondroma and chondrosarcoma is vast. Normally, a biopsy is taken and the tissue sample diagnosed prior to the surgery. Unfortunately, I do not know of the hospital system in Germany so I cannot point you to the appropriate hospital.
