Depression is not uncommon after spine surgery, especially with a prolonged pain period prior to surgery. The four questions to answer can identify depression. Are you more irritable than normal? Are you lethargic (tired)? Are you having trouble sleeping or getting to sleep? Finally, do you have anhedonia (the lack of ability to look forward to the next “fun” thing?

Voltaire said it the best: “the lower back is at the crossroads where the psyche meets the soma (the brain meets the body). For some reason, depression is more common in back disorders (and neck too) than any other disorder in the body.

You might need some counseling or some medications to help with this temporary condition. Will see you soon! Call the nurses at the office if you need help sooner.

Hi Doctor, Carolyn from Grand Lake. Yesterday evening after doing my home PT, I felt like doing some dusting around the house, so I Got my long duster out to do a chandelier and my back sort of popped. I am wondering if I should go over to Granby medical and have an xray today. Thank you
