Hi Doc, this forum is great…Its hard to find doctors out there that will help with your concerns and questions…
I had a 2 level L5S1-L4-L5 lumbar fusion july 9,2012 as of today I left my surgeons office in fear…he told me that L5-S1 spacer kind of pushed into my bone “vertabre”..I lost some height but he says he can do nothing now…he said there is still room for the nerve but a xray 6 months from now to make sure its not moving anymore..He blamed it on smoking but I haven’t smoked much at all…maybe 1-2 a day if that…im 12 months but this was not there at 7 months or 8 months…so the past 4 months it seems like the cage”spacer went into the bone alittle…did you ever see this happen or should I be concerned…I still have some pain but I think its all soft tissue and muscle pain which is very painful…What most likely happened is that the PEEK cage spacer pushed into the endplate of the vertebra and you lost some height of the disc space. As long as the cage did not migrate to an area of a nerve root or cord, there should be no danger. Fusion can still occur in this scenerio.
It is somewhat unusual that the cage would erode into the endplate after eight months postop as typically the bone should be fused by then. If you are out 12 months, it might be helpful to consider a CT scan to determine the extent of the fusion at this point.
