Osteoporosis will possibly cause some additional problems for your surgeon. Fusion is complimented by instrumentation (rods and screws). This hardware holds the vertebra in place while the fusion takes place. If the bone is soft, the screws hold more tenuously and greater care has to be taken during the rehabilitation period.

If the bone is very soft, a brace can be added to prevent motion (or falls) from affecting the fusion. If the bone is extremely soft (very rare), sometimes it is best to leave out the hardware but correction of any malalignment is not possible.
