Hello Doc, I would like to ask a question about Vitamin D consumption. Please take the time off to reply to my post.

I heard that the elderly should take vitamin D supplements to avoid pain and other issues. But in what quantities? Should it be 1000 IU daily or 60,000 IU weekly for a vitamin D deficient person?

( I got my mother checked for vitamin D, its only 16(deficient according to the report). She has been suffering from arthritis for many years.)

The standard daily recommendation is 400IU daily but recommendations are now in flux as Vit. D is being investigated for cardiac health as well. For patients with malabsorption syndrome, the recommendations are higher. This is a fascinating field right now and I am sure that the ideas behind Vit. D metabolism are going to change in the near future. You do have to be careful as Vit. D is a fat soluble vitamin and higher doses can lead to an overdose situation.
