    Hi Dr,

I was diagnosed with discitis at the end of December and have been on an antibiotic regimen through a PICC line. I’m at 5 weeks with no substantial relief from the low back pain. There was no biopsy, but I initially had sepsis which led to the infectious disease doctor’s treatment based on the cultures and labs. Should I possibly be on another antibiotic if the pain hasn’t gone away yet? My doctor plans to end the 6 week treatment and see how it goes, but I am concerned that the infection is still present since I’m still in pain. I worry permanent damage will be done if not remedied soon. We caught it within 3 or 4 days of the initial pain, so I’m shocked it hasn’t improved yet. I’m a 40 year old male in great shape with no health issues. Any thoughts?

Normally, the recovery from discitis/osteomyelitis is measured by symptoms, X-rays and lab testing. If you are improving, I would expect that your back pain should be diminished at 5 weeks. I do put patients in a brace with a spine infection.

What bacteria was found on blood cultures and were antibiotic sensitivities performed? Are your lab numbers (ESR and CRP) coming down? Do you have MRI or CT imaging documenting extent of bony involvement?
