12 weeks after second discectomy at thel5s1 level. First one was jan of 2021. Sever sciatic pain down leg and muscle weakness was resolved after the surgery. Started PT after a fee weeks. Continued to have pain in glut but not severe. Have continued to have no painful muscle tingling and spasms in calf. Was feeling like making good progress up until a week ago. Now having tingling when sitting and when lying down. Also started to see some tingling in left calf which never had. I tried sone advil for a week but has not stopped the tingling. Pain is not the issue. Im very concerned could have new instability. Dont know what to do? More PT and walking or rest? Very draining emotionally.
You report “Now having tingling when sitting and when lying down. Also started to see some tingling in left calf which never had”. Tingling (paresthesia) is generally not a concerning symptom. The decompressed nerve can swell somewhat late after surgery and produce tingling.
Instability is the shifting of one vertebra on another due to worn articulations and causes positional pain which would be the predominant symptom, not tingling. Try to ignore the symptoms for now and give it time to calm down.

This forum has been very helpful. As long as pain is low do recommend walking and PT or should I rest. Also Ive thought about trying to get steriod pack to see of that helps. I have noticed pain dull pain in back and sometimes in hamstring after been standing which is new the last week. Nothing as bad as before surgery. Im so gun shy and concerned about doing anything that could make things worse. Thank you.

Continue with walking and PT. Of any action significantly increases the paresthesias-simply avoid that activity. Pain that is mild is expected especially after activity as the nerve is still swollen. If the paresthesias are very annoying, you can try a short course of oral steroid.

Its now been a year since my surgery which was for a recurrent herniation of the l5s1 disc. Feel pretty good. Have done PT once a week for the year. One on one with PT. The one thing that has not gone away is the muscle twitching in lower leg/calf. Also will get sudden calf cramp. The twitching does not hurt. My concern is that is a sign that something is not right with my disc and that I shouls continue to avoid things tennis or golf? Am I being too paranoid?
