    Hi Dr Corenman,
I had surgery for bone spurs on facet joint, hypertrophic ligamentum flavum and fragments removed from disc at L5/S1. Prior to surgery I had bad morning pain and was very restricted in my movements. My Dr also cleaned out my lateral recess at L5. For almost 2 weeks after surgery felt like a million bucks and was so happy. On the 12th day I squatted down to pick something up so I was avoiding bending at the waist. I had an instant burn in my butt cheek. Since I have been on 6 day steroid and have numbing in big toe,top of foot and side of lower leg plus pain all throughout my leg and butt. I only had butt and minor leg pain before surgery. I am in much worse shape than before surgery. My Dr thinks it’s just inflammation and I broke off scar tissue when I squatted? I’m 57 and he said my disc is very dry and it’s unlikely I reherniated. I thought scar tissue developed much latter like 6 weeks. I’m afraid I reherniated or have periformis syndrome. Your thoughts?
    Thank you,

You don’t have piriformis syndrome. You might have a seroma (collection of post-surgical fluid), a mechanical collapse of the operated level or even a new disc herniation. It is possible that the nerve is swollen from that squat maneuver. With new advancing symptoms and failure of oral steroids, I think a new MRI is appropriate.

Thank you for such a quick response! I failed to disclose I’m only on my 2nd day of my steroid. I’m in such disarray mentally from this I forgot. I also had some swelling in my back area after the surgery, but mostly has subsided. Again, thank you!
