Hello Dr. Corenman – Thank you for having this forum. I’m in desperate need of help. 3 years ago I was in an accident where my driver’s door was hit. I had my head turned to the left watching as the truck came toward me. Ever since I have had a headache, zinging left side of neck and face, swelling on the left side of my head and neck, feeling uncoordinated, sometimes ears ringing. I have been to doctor after doctor and mostly I’ve been told that I’m crazy or a faker. I am neither. I’ve had several MRIs, CT scans, x-rays, and a dynamic motion x-ray. I’m told that the studies show joint space narrowing between C1-2 on the left side and that this isn’t a big deal, isn’t causing my symptoms, etc. The dynamic motion report says “TMPRESSION:: There is asymmetrical motion of c1 on c2 in right lateral bending suggesting. This indicates ligamentous laxity and/or sprain of the apical and/or accessory ligaments.” This study was done at a chiropractor’s office and I have only found 1 MD that will even consider it. He says: 1) that result is because it was somehow manipulated to look like that and 2) even if my C1 slides off to the side it doesn’t meet the criteria for instability because it’s not sliding forward. I understand what he’s saying; however, my symptoms are severe and unbearable. The only help I’m being offered is psychological…and I’m telling you, I AM in fact headed to crazy town but it’s because nobody is helping me with my neck. Now, after 3 years of this torture, I have a grade 3 L5-S1 anterolisthesis. The pain in my low back is minor compared to what is in my neck. What can be done about my neck? How do I get somebody to help me? Do you think my low back issue is related to my neck issue? I didn’t have any low back symptoms before.

Thank you for any help or advice you can offer.

Dynamic fluoroscopic X-rays have a very high rate of mal-diagnosis. There are no good papers that distinguish these studies as worthwhile and helpful for treatment. This is why they are not helpful or accepted as a tool for diagnosis.

You certainly have an issue that has no been diagnosed yet but don’t hang your hat on this inappropriate imaging study.

Your grade III isthmic slip at L5-S1 is a real problem but I understand that it does not give you the problems the upper neck disorder does.
