I am 8 weeks post L5/S1 micro D. At my six week appointment, my surgeon told me I could start cycling again. I have a peloton bike that I rode a lot before surgery. He told me:

    -Ease into it
-Do not ride outside until the 12 week mark
-At 12 weeks, I can do whatever I want

Other than that, he did not specify about riding. I built up to about 30 minutes five times a week on my bike, not getting out of the saddle at all, and nothing extreme.

My question is this: Is it expected to still have some mild discomfort (both a little in the back and down the outside of my leg) while cycling at this point? I also still get some when sitting for a long time. It is not bad pain at all, and I’m much better than pre-surgery, but do still have some symptoms with certain activities. I’m struggling to understand how there could still be pain if the pressure is removed?

Some discomfort with exertion after a microdisc surgery is to be expected. The root will swell after it is decompressed and be irritable for as much as 3 months post-op. This should pass with some time. If it is irritable, a short course of oral steroids can help.

I have the same thing happen with my PT exercises sometimes, so I’m sure it’s just irritable. Thank you!
