I had L4,L5, SI rods and screws in 1999.In 2000 rods broke then surgery redone. So now I had a issue that led me to another surgery. This time I am told he wants to go up 2 vertbrea not one. I woke up while being wheeled into the recovery room. PAIN AND HYPERSENSITIVY AND NUMB INNER LEFT LEG AND SONE INNER LEFT LEG AND BOTH LEGS ON THE OUTER THIGHS. One year on 2/8/18. I was screamed at like I was faking, then was told I did surgury to get meds.( I was on meds from a pain clinic ,the pre op said do not stop taking) now I am crippled, not fully.EMG shows L3 is messed up. Left leg inner thigh no muscle hurts from calf to groin. Outer left is contracted non stop. Right inner thigh slowly atrophy and outter right is a pocket ,like flat. Pain is through the roof. Surgeon who took me off meds after 3 months. My body was humming and terrible pain. I lost 57 lbs and could not hardly walk. He now after giving meds again , says I have a hyper nerve, Sensitivity Syndrome. I forget the name. I know removing the rods and putting a cage is hard but he had to retract a nerve. I know he is responsible. MRI shows nothing. But it’s under my left ribs where he cut into that hurts as well. Please help me. I cannot hang on much longer. Pain clinic is ok , better that surgeon. But they are afraid to raise meds. Why!!! I want to be fixed. This is a story, still needs a answer. Like how to determine where the nerve is damaged. It’s a small town even EMG tech said NOTHING IS WRONG.I showed her my legs. She sighed and then told me it’s my L3.
EMGs can be helpful to look for nerve injury but if the problem is a sensory injury (no motor deficits), then the EMG/NCV will be negative. See https://neckandback.com/treatments/emgncv-electromyograms-and-nerve-conduction-studies/. Another possibility is that you have CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome-also known as RSD) See https://neckandback.com/conditions/complex-regional-pain-syndrome-crps-reflex-sympathetic-dystrophy-rsd-causalgia-neck/.
The possibility of the nerve root at L3 being stretched and injured is also a real possibility. It sounds like you have a DLIF or OLIF (“it’s under my left ribs where he cut into that hurts as well”). Did you have one of those procedures? With this approach, the incision is in the side of the body and a cage is implanted in the side of the vertebral disc space. This requires the approach go through the psoas muscle which contains the exiting nerve roots and a nerve can be injured by retraction or by direct compression.
It sounds like you have chronic radiculopathy (“PAIN AND HYPERSENSITIVE AND NUMB INNER LEFT LEG AND SONE INNER LEFT LEG AND BOTH LEGS ON THE OUTER THIGHS”). See https://neckandback.com/conditions/chronic-radiculopathy/ to see if that fits.

Just because you are giving answers instead of wait. Just another month! Now it’s there is nothing we can do. It’s your nerves. They are weak. Unrealistic things from this surgeon who e be enough accused me of lying and of course doing surgery just for meds. Incredible non sense. So I will answer the question about the the cut under my left rib. Yes that was done to remove the old aparatis. I also have a 12 inch incision over my spine. Why both? I do not know. However I need to correct this. My legs have atrophy overall. also spots of atrophy from where the muscle is gone! Like the inner thigh. Please what can I do. I have a appointment with pain management this weak. Can I ask him any thing specific. Then perhaps we can meet. Also should I or may I take something like a steroid or even HGH , or plasma or platelet injections, I am not sure what they are called. Again thank you!.
