I just had my MRI done 9/26, saw my PCP who read the radiologist findings and said signs of arthritis as well as the bottom two discs bulging and showing some degenerative signs. He’s referred me to a back surgeon. I’m only 27 years old. I had my first child in 2006 and gained 80lbs, healthy pregnancy but I’ve always been very petite at 100lbs. My second pregnancy I delivered 7-4-16 gained 100lbs with him, and during my pregnancy I had very bad carpal tunnel in my arms and wrists, back pain, severe swelling not caused by diabetes, and during my epidural the anesthesiologist said I was leaning on one side more than the other. (DUH! I was 7 cm and contracting!) after birth the entire lower right half of my body remained completely numb for 8 hours after I regained feeling on the left side. My chiropractor has always said that my hips are very unaligned with my right side being higher. I’m terrified of having arthritis at 27 with an 11 year old and a 1 year old. My pelvis bone on the right side of my back protrudes much further and more noticeable than the left side.

Could my weight gain and epidural during pregnancy have caused these lumbar issues?! I can hardly bend over to pick my son up these last few months, and find myself constantly on the floor to sleep because the hard surface helps my back. Any advice?

Based upon your age with no significant prior trauma, most likely your degenerative changes are genetically related. Your right leg numbness could have developed from the fetus compressing the sciatic nerve while you were in delivery. The compression of the nerve took some time to recover (functional injury-see https://neckandback.com/conditions/peripheral-nerve-anatomy/).

You have degenerative disc disease. See the section https://neckandback.com/treatments/conservative-treatment-mechanical-lower-back-disorders/ to understand how to manage this problem.
