    Dr corenman please help me!
I got an mri last month and my l5-s1 disc has almost disappeared. It is very thin.i think that 10% or less of my disc has remained.Surgeon said the spinal canal is ok , i have not pain in my waist,no herniation i must not worry. But what can i expect for the future?Surgeon said that this hapenned because i had a fenestration discectomy on l5-s1 in 2003.Otherwise i would be ok now. With this disc can i work? get married? have a family? or my perspectives are facet joint arthritis, fusions and endplate changes? as to say continuous problems with my back until i will die?
    i need your answer desperately.
    thank you.

You had a disc herniation and microdiscectomy back in 2003. This can start the degenerative cascade and lead to isolated disc absorption (IDR-see https://neckandback.com/conditions/isolated-disc-resorption-lumbar-spine-idr/). IDR is fully livable with many times minimal problems. There are some patients with IDR who are impaired and need surgery but many others (including me) who can live with this disorder without significant lifestyle changes.

Even with the possible need for a fusion of the L5-S1 disc, these are some of my happiest patients after recovery.
