    Dr corenman,
I wanted to ask about modic changes.I have been diagnosed with modic changes type I to II on the L5-S1 vertebrae after discectomy surgery on l5-s1.is it curable? How long it takes for total relief from the pain?

Modic changes are found with disc shock absorption failure. Without the cushioning effect of the disc, the bony endplates of the vertebra undergo more loading forces than they can withstand. This causes endplate fractures and fractures of the supporting trabecular bone (the reinforcement bony spicules that act like internal buttresses within the body of the vertebra). This condition can be quite painful causing lower back pain with loading, intolerance of vibration (a bumpy car ride or turbulence on an airplane). There are however patients with this condition that have no pain so Modic changes may or may not cause lower back pain.

The standard treatment is core strengthening exercises and medications but symptomatic patients with significant impairment may need a fusion surgery.

Dr corenman thank you very much for your reply.
Let me mention my symptoms.I do not have low back pain.My pain is on my right hip and it pains when i sit on it or in the bed when i lay on it.It seems to be more muscular than any other type of pain. And it is tolerable.
    Thank you very much.
