Hi Dr. Corenman, what is the consensus regarding the barracaid annular prosthesis, and hydrogel for central disc fluid / disc height maintenance?
“Barracaid” prosthesis and Hydrogel both worry me at this point. The Barracaid device does try to answer a problem that we all have which is recurrent disc herniation. It does so with a device that implants into the endplate as the base of the device has to be inserted into the body of the vertebra and protrude through the endplate. Dislodgment would be a worry making implant stenosis and root injury a concern. In addition, most herniations occur through major annular disruptions. This device covers a small surface area and would not cover the entire tear.
Hydrogel can break down and turn into the recurrent disc herniation so I am not too hopeful for this device.
Nonetheless, I do applaud individuals who are trying to solve problems that can occur in the spine. However, these two products are no yet ready for prime time.
