Dear Dr.
Iam a 56 year old male who underwent a lumber spine surgery at L3 and L4 fusion in India in July, 2012.
Most of the pain and related problems went away. After my 2nd review this year Iam being told that Level 5
disc is bulging and needs to be corrected through another surgery before I start having more pain.
In the recent past I used to experience some pain radiating down through the right leg especially. I used
to think the pain was coming from the previous surgery area.
Iam scared of another surgery. What can I do ? Is there a way of avoiding surgery but have relief from
the current and future pain ? Is it true that I can have paralisis if surgery is not done ?
Regards. Freddie K.MulengaTaking care of a bad disc at one level does not guarantee that the next level or so will not be a pain problem later. The analogy is if a bad hip is replaced, this does not confer immunity of the same sided knee joint. The knee can still become degenerated.
You however note that the “Level 5 disc is bulging and needs to be corrected through another surgery before I start having more pain”. You note this disc is “bulging” but you imply that you have none to minimal symptoms, in my opinion-just leave it alone. I look at bad discs all day long. If these discs are not causing pain, with some exceptions, they are left alone.
Paralysis is extremely rare. Don’t let someone scare you into a surgery that you do not need.
Check out the thread “conservative treatment of mechanical lower back disorders” to understand these problems and their treatment. There is a new video on this thread too but the information may be somewhat advanced unless you spend the time to understand some of the terms used.
