An “open vertebra” could be a spina bifida occulta. This condition occurs when the back ring of the vertebra does not close at birth. It is somewhat common and is the lack of the a portion of the back of the spinal canal to close. The spine when we are in utero is opened in the back. It closes like a zipper from the neck down but occasionally, the bottom one or two vertebra fail to close. This condition may or may not cause back pain. It depends upon “how open” the back of the vertebra is.
