    Hello Donald S.

My name is Kacie, I am 20 Years old and I have lumbar degenerative disc disease. For 6 months I been having really bad back pain to the point my knee gave out and I had to have arthroscopy, because of a fat pad from a previous injury. I have been to a spine specialist here in Australia and I just want a second opinion about what to do. I feel lost I don’t really know what I should do.

You first have to describe your symptoms. When did the symptoms first start? How did they start? Where does it hurt, when does it hurt, what have you done to treat it and what have the symptoms prevented you from doing? Basically, what have the symptoms done to change your life?

My symptom are lower back pain ranging from a 8 1/2 out of ten, I was diagnosed with scheuermann’s disease when I was 13 so can’t really say how or why this happened but didn’t think to much of it till now, but consist back pain started November 2011, I work in child care and I thought I pulled something. Pain comes every morning every night, not so much during the day cause I work but when I’m at home doing nothing I really hurt. I can’t sit for long periods of time nor can I sit in a car to long. I am seeing a spine specialist at the moment but he say that there’s nothing he can really do as I have 3 degenerative disc. I am having injections placed into the 3 areas to see if it’s just one disc that is causing my pain. My back prevents me from doing sport, dancing, playing with the kids at work, can’t bend or pick up children and loss of sleep.

If you have Scheuermann’s disorder, do you have a significant increased kyphosis in your thoracic spine? The normal curve degree is twenty to forty degrees. Is your curve measured greater than that and if so, by how much? (see Scheuermann’s disorder on website)

A greater thoracic kyphosis will increase the lumbar lordosis to compensate for the curve. This can lead to overload of the lumbar facets. Have you had facet blocks (see website)?

Finally, are the degenerative changes the spine specialist views associated with Scheuermann’s changes (Schmoral’s nodes, irregular endplates)? That is, are the discs degenerative because of Scheuermann’s disorder or as a result of that disorder?
