Knee issues can be connected to the lower back. Nerve compression in the spine can cause nerve pain that can mimic knee or foot problems. There are classic findings on history and physical examination that can differentiate local knee and ankle problems from nerve generated pain.

Also, favoring a leg due to knee or ankle pain can increase the stress on the lumbar spine and cause some symptoms of lower back pain due to the abnormal gait.
