I received a spinal steroid injection at S1 on the right and L5 & S1 on the left three days ago. Since then I’ve had an increase in pain in my toes, I’m having problems walking, my testicles started burning, and today my penis started burning and tingling and I have to urinate every 20 minutes or so.
My doctor said in his career he’s never had this happen and could offer no advice except to go to the ER.

Have you every heard of this happening? Any ideas? I don’t know if the ER could do anything.

    Help!

    Thanks, Ron K.

There are three possibilities that have occurred. One is that you have a “volume effect” of the steroid. Any injection into the canal has to have some volume. Normally it is about 5-7cc but could be much greater. This mass takes up space that could cause temporary compression of the nerve sac. Also, the “speed” of injection could cause this if the injectionist was not “slow” to introduce the fluid.

The second is the possibility of an epidural bleed. There are many small blood vessels in this region and it is not unheard of to “prick” one of these. If this vessel continued to bleed (especially if it was an artery), then you could have a mass effect and compression of the nerves.

Finally, it is possible that the injection went intradural (within the dura). This injectable material is not designed to be inside the dural sac and the injectionist could have inadvertantly placed the injection here.

A good physical examination will reveal if there is nerve injury. An MRI might be necessary if the symptoms become more intense or you lose motor strength or bowel and bladder function but that is unlikely.

Was just at the ER. Only thing they found was a slightly elevated white count. Then said an MRIS isn’t necessary and sent me home still in great pain and walking dysfunctionally. Don’t think they believed me because I am medically weird? Said to wait and it should pass and then I should feel relief from the steroid. I doubt that very much now.

But what can I do about the increased pain? My meds aren’t touching it. I can’t sleep or eat because of it.

And thanks for answering so quickly.

If your symptoms are not progressing, you could wait this out and see what happens in a couple of weeks. If your symptoms are progressing, you need to call your injectionist and insist that he or she order an MRI.

    Dr…

Went to ER yesterday. Still suffering terribly from the steroid injection. Doctors don’t believe me because I’m medically weird. What can I do to relieve the intense pain in my feet and my inability to walk very far? All this from injection that was supposed to help!
